Grim 'n' Dark Decisions

If a dilemma is having to choose between two equally terrible choices, I have whatever the opposite of a dilemma is. I'm really struck right now between two awesome choices. I received Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying 3rd Edition for Christmas and have been very slowly going through the main rulebook. It's not that I'm not excited or eager to learn the rules and pitch a game to my group. Nope, it's just that I'm particularly distracted right now by a different game, Savage Worlds, specifically the Day After Ragnarok setting.

I've been gushing about how awesome WHFRPG 3rd looks since well before its release, and so my eagerness is quite understandable. At the same time, I've really been interested in rules engines like Basic Role Playing and Savage Worlds that are built around customization and the ease of creating homebrew settings. It doesn't hurt that the current rulebook for Savage Worlds, the Explorer's Edition, costs a mere $10.00. I know the Bro and I each own a copy, and if the system is a hit with the group, I could easily seeing one or two of the other guys each picking up their own copy as well, although it may not be necessary considering how simple the system appears.

So this is my "dilemma." I'm trying to learn two new rules systems to run my next game. I'm leaning towards Day After Ragnarok as the rules will be simpler and, to be honest, there's less prep time involved for me. I also know that the WWII time period has greater appeal and relatibility as well, which is always a bonus when pitching a new game. I also want something that's more likely going to be a success than the last time I GM'ed a game, which was in All Flesh Must Be Eaten. I assume the Unisystem is rules engine has to work better than how I ran it, but I was pretty discouraged from how our game went. So, a new system it is, and this time something more epic/pulpy.

All this notwithstanding, I am excited to see the GM Toolkit announced for WHFRPG 3rd. I'm hoping it'll be decently cheap on Amazon to pick it up by the time it comes out (assuming I've finished reading the rules at that point).

Anyway, I'll be posting more about my DAR (Day After Ragnarok) campaign planning in the future, but here's some teaser concepts of names of organizations, NPC's, enemies, etc. I've been thinking about:

The Red Lance
The Shankhill Butchers
The Chicago Police Department
The Town of New Water
Skags

All of these things I could see working into a Day After Ragnarok campaign in a big way. New Water's the only original thing on my part here btw :D. Map image for the Day After Ragnarok setting borrowed from Atomic Overmind, where you can see a bigger version of it!
