Battles of Westeros is FFG's next big board game - finally revealed

There you have it folks, it's A Game of Thrones related board game using the Battle Lore rules. News is G.R.R. Martin will be in attendance in November at the Event Center as part of a special Event Center event possibly named "Days of Ice & Fire" featuring FFG's collection of Ice & Fire related games. Maybe we'll see A Dance with Dragons by then...? No, probably not. Check back soon for our full coverage of the Grand Opening and any other details we can parse out for the new game.

  1. Well, I was hoping for something else, preferably related to Twilight Imperium, and I'm not too into the Game of Thrones universe, but hey, FFG does great games, so I expect this one will be ok, too.

My guess is they wanted to use the Battlelore mechanics in a more straight fantasy realm with better rules for magic and other fantasy elements. Battlelore straddles history and fantasy in an odd way that doesn't always work for me. And they already had the GoT license, so put two and two together and you get the Battles of Westros...

I note the cover picture says "Core Set" which implies multiple expansions, but it's an FFG game, so why should I be surprised!

  2. Hmmm, looking more closely (and adjusting my glasses for aging eyes), I now note the box cover says, "A BattleLore Game." So I guess it's not an adaptation but a straight-up Battlelore expansion.

I have to say, that's a bit disappointing for the Mystery Game, which I thought would truly break some new ground.

  3. I wouldn't assume the "A BattleLore Game" really means all that much. It could definitely be just branding among mostly similar games with some decidedly different mechanics.

  4. I am pretty sure that they said the release would be in the next few months. Not November. Though I could be wrong. I for one love Battlelore and think that there are many possibilities with the blending of the two properties.

  5. You are correct, the release is soon, I got mixed up. I believe the November date is actually for a special event with Martin featuring all of their Game of Thrones-related games, I have corrected the original post - thanks for pointing that out.

  6. I'm not overly a fan of G.R.R. Martin's books. I will be interested to see more about this game... though I'm not sure my collection needs another take on the C&C system...

    Cheers,

    Giles.

  7. @Caradoc: if you're not overly a fan of GRRM's books, can your opinion about anything be trusted? ;)

  8. @cubeblue: now now, some people just don't like how GRR Martin uses Tyrion as his Mary Sue. The guy's name is Giles, so he can't be all that bad :D Thanks for your feedback both of you!

  9. I got to play this yesterday, so I can say that it is not a Battlelore expansion. It uses the base Battlelore rules as a foundation, but it is a very different beast than most of the command and color series.

  10. @cubeblue My opinion is most certainly not to be trusted Mwahahaha.

On a serious note - I'll be interested to see what this means for Battlelore vanilla...

And whether we'll see any other 'Battlelore Games' in other settings?

@Hopeless Gamer - That was part of it. In truth I need to re-read the books as it has been a looooong time!

    Cheers,

    Giles.

  11. @Carodoc

It sounded like they are still planning more expansions for Battlelore as well.

  12. I am super-stoked about this. Battle Lore is one of my favorite games and the setting is really intriguing (fan of the books et al). I'm looking forward to this on every level.

  13. @ Michael Yes, I hope so. What made this version feel differently to BL?

    Cheers,

    Giles.

  14. I tried to post the differences, but it had too many characters. I have submitted the game to BGG and will post it there once they accept the game entry. then I can link it.
