NaNoWriMo and NaMiPaMo - Creative November Gaming Style

Now that we've all survived Shocktober we've got a couple of new projects as we sprint towards Thanksgiving! If you haven't heard of it, there's this neat internet phenomenon known as "NaNoWriMo" a.k.a. National Novel Writing Month. The idea is that you write every day in November in order to complete a 50,000 word novel. No editing, no looking back, just forward progress to get words on to the page. Keep Reading to see what Andrea and I have up our sleeves to celebrate this month-long torture session!

I participated a little bit last year, but I only got to about 5,000 words in on an urban fantasy story before I decided I really wasn't interested in writing urban fantasy and quit. This year I'm going to modify the month's goal to fit my needs to get creativity out of my brain and onto the page. Instead of writing a novel, I'm going to push big time to get a lot of content done for a gaming project I started earlier this year. Instead of starting at word one (like you're supposed to), I started more around the 14,000 word mark.

I'm not going to go into a lot of detail about what I'm writing this month, but I will give some hints. I'll also be using The Hopeless Gamer to help keep myself motivated and accountable towards reaching my 50,000 word goal. The project is an original setting of my own creation. It's for a game I've talked about from time to time on the blog. It has a working title that I'm not going to name yet, but overall it's a concept and project I'm really excited for and have really developed a passion for. I'll be talking more about the process of writing fluff and crunch throughout the month (mostly when I'm trying to procrastinate from actually working on the project), and I may give some little hints here and there to give you more insight into the setting itself.

I also started a NaNoWriMo project last November, but didn't even make it to 2,500 words before realizing that I just don't really like WRITING that much... but I DO like painting minis! So this year, I've invented my own month-long marathon and named it NaMiPaMo - National Miniature Painting Month. My goal is to completely paint and base 30 minis in 30 days. I'll be keeping you posted on all of my works-in-progress. Please feel free to leave a comment if there's anything you'd like to see me attempt as far as techniques or tutorials!

  1. Following suit-- planning on doing either 1K words new writing on our house rules or 2K of revision and polishing each day.

  2. I've got a huge backlog of minis that I haven't gotten around to yet, including some paid commissions. I think I might join you in namipamo. =)

  3. Awesome, I'd love to have company through this wild endeavor! I'm only three days in and already wondering what I've gotten myself into - been filing, gluing, and priming like mad :)
